Across the globe, people are expressing dissent with our democratic institutions. Political extremes and more autocratic leadership are gaining favor. We live in a multi-polar, complex and rapidly changing world, which is put under pressure by inequality, climate change, migration and so on. I think people are feeling increasingly powerless. They feel their voices are not heard and their lives might not matter so much. I believe it is a need for security and order that leads them to political extremes, more autocratic leadership, nationalism and identity politics. These all promise simple solutions – sometimes just ignoring existing problems – and a way out of the political deadlock of the mainstream parties. How can we make sure every vote really counts? I have written quite a few pieces about him already, but hopefully this will be my last. Donald Trump keeps intriguing. His rise to power surprised many, as does the continuing support of his base throughout his presidency, despite breaking every political rule in the book. It seems hard at times to make sense out of his often inconsistent, contradictory and chaotic behavior. However, I do not think he acts randomly or incoherently. There is one thread that weaves through much of his leadership – one that is so unpleasant we might not want to see it. Donald Trump, he is an enigma. He took the political world by surprise. Every day his words and actions continue to stir up debate (and might continue to do so, depending on what happens after November 3rd). He brings out either shock and disgust or cheering and adoration. But let us look a little deeper, to try and understand how we got where we are today, and – most interestingly – how Donald Trump got into the position where he is today. In tijden van steeds verregaandere globalisering en migratie grijpen velen terug op de natiestaat als hun houvast. The saddest thing about alle these terror attacks, maybe even sadder than all the suffering caused, is you get used to them. The second saddest thing though, is that everyone seems to forget what a terror attack really is. A terror attack is not just some random act of violence committed by some crazy Muslim, because – you know – that is what crazy Muslims do. Terrorism is the use of “indiscriminate violence […] in order to achieve a political, religious or ideological aim” (thank you Wikipedia ), in this case the aim being stopping us from fighting ISIS. It is very important to remember this, for two reasons. First of all, if we forget to mention this, we feed the idea that crazy Muslims commit random acts of violence, because that is just what they do (thank you Western media for your objectivity). Over nationalisme en het einde van de globalisering Brexit, Trump, Wilders, Le Pen, moslimbannen, islamofobie, ‘post-truth’, populisme, verrechtsing en verruwing, elk nieuwsbericht vandaag de dag lijkt wel één van deze termen te bevatten. De wereld lijkt in brand te staan. Wat is er aan de hand? Welke orde kunnen we vinden in deze schijnbare chaos? En wat kunnen we eraan doen? De afgelopen eeuw is de wereld enorm veel kleiner geworden. Dankzij vliegtuig en internet is de wereld – letterlijk – binnen handbereik. President Trump bekleedt nu al iets langer dan een maand het presidentschap van de VS. Voor zijn aantreden leken velen niet goed te weten wat van hem te verwachten. Ondanks alle chaos die hij de afgelopen weken veroorzaakte, lijken er zich toch enkele duidelijke lijnen af te tekenen. Het ‘America First’ van de tweeter in chief geeft niet veel om goede internationale relaties. Een wankelend Europa leek de afgelopen weken vooral bang of – in het beste geval – afkerig af te wachten . Het zou van deze bedreiging echter ook een opportuniteit kunnen maken, als het tenminste de nodige visie aan de dag durft te leggen en Amerika’s rol als leider van de vrije wereld durft over te nemen. Dit verhaal is de neerslag van een week reizen door Palestina en Israël met de NGO Palestina Solidariteit . De aanleiding van de trip was de Law-Train affaire, een samenwerking tussen onder meer de KU Leuven en de Israëlische politie, die op kritiek stuitte vanwege de martelpraktijken en oneerlijke processen waarvan de Israëlische politie beschuldigd wordt. Met een groep juristen en een prof van de KU Leuven gingen we ter plaatse kijken hoe het gesteld was met de rechten van de Palestijnen. We spraken met talrijke NGO's, activisten en slachtoffers van het regime. Dit is hun verhaal. De muur loopt dwars door Palestijns gebied en zorgt voor ellenlange wachtrijen aan de checkpoints Israël-Palestina, geen conflict op deze wereld dat al zo lang aansleept en waarover al zoveel inkt heeft gevloeid.
